One of the most memorable images from the first film is the famous yellow tracksuit with black stripes worn by the lead character, Beatrix Kiddo, played by Uma Thurman.
This yellow suit is no accident. Tarantino is a big fan of classic Asian cinema, and one of his favorite actors is Bruce Lee. Kill Bill itself contains numerous references to Lee’s film. The yellow tracksuit itself is a tribute to the actor’s final work, Game of Death.
But why does the main character wear a yellow suit in Game of Death? Some believe that Bruce Lee wanted to express his nationality with this color. However, this is just a theory; the truth is simpler. The actor had to choose between two colors for the suit—yellow or black. But when it became known that in one of the fight scenes, an enemy leaves a boot print on the main character’s suit, the decision was made to go with yellow for contrast. Yellow is also a suitable color for Beatrix Kiddo, who effectively dispatches her enemies with a katana—it makes the blood splatter more visible. Quentin Tarantino also borrowed not only the yellow tracksuit from Game of Death but also the shoes, specifically sneakers from the Japanese brand Onitsuka Tiger, with one difference. While Bruce Lee wore the Tai Chi, Uma Thurman wore very similar Mexico 66 sneakers.
