USSR symbolism in sports apparel

A tracksuit with the USSR’s symbols was a source of pride for a Soviet athlete. But why do so many people today strive to find such a uniform?

01

USSR in the memory of generations

The Soviet era is receding further and further, and several new generations have grown up in modern Russia. And those whose childhood, adolescence, and adulthood coincided with the Soviet era continually return to the past with warmth. Some admire the history of a vast country of great victories, an empire that conquered the Arctic and space.

For most, the achievements of Soviet scientists, engineers, artists, and athletes invariably evoke nothing but pride and admiration.

Many still recall the excellent results achieved by the multi-level education system built in the USSR. For many years, the country was considered the most well-read. According to the Constitution, education in the Soviet Union was completely free.

There are also those who nostalgically sing, "My native land is vast, it has many forests, fields, and rivers. I know of no other country where a person can breathe so freely."

Symbols of the USSR in modern Russia

  • Music of the USSR anthem

One of the country’s official symbols remains unchanged in the modern version of Russia’s main song. It is this melody that our athletes hear as they stand on the podium, having won the highest awards, as if taking up the baton from similar winners of the Soviet era.
  • USSR coat of arms

The second main symbol also evokes warm nostalgic feelings. We recall the friendship and mutual assistance of the fraternal republics, which stood united against the enemy and then together celebrated the victorious spring of 1945. The coat of arms invariably evokes memories of the industrial might and agricultural wealth of the great power.
  • Abbreviation "USSR"

Surprisingly, even the abbreviation "USSR" itself evokes warm and kind feelings; upon hearing or seeing it, one immediately imagines a map of the Soviet Union with its former borders.

03

Soviet minimalism in sports

The Soviet Union’s coat of arms and the abbreviation "USSR" are often seen today. But these symbols look most natural on sportswear. They seem to recall the victories of Soviet athletes, whose records have forever gone down in history.

The uniforms of the Soviet national team athletes were always very simple. There was nothing pretentious or provocative about them. Austerity, simplicity, minimalism, and versatility—these were the hallmarks of the tracksuits of that period. The most emblematic is the uniform worn by the USSR team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. All athletes wore dark blue jersey suits. The word "USSR" was prominently displayed on the chest.

Later, at the next Olympics in Melbourne, the team again wore simple and formal suits, virtually indistinguishable from those worn four years earlier. The designers made minor adjustments—raising the collar and adding a zipper. And again a bright accent — just the inscription "USSR".

Rusich Sport is reviving the USSR style

The "USSR" inscription has become one of the symbols of the new generation of tracksuits produced today by Rusich Sport. The line features a whole series of sportswear in the traditional colors of Soviet tracksuits: red, blue, and, of course, black. As the manufacturer writes on its website: "The 'USSR Tracksuit' is a timeless classic of Soviet sports, created using modern technology."
The "USSR" inscription can be displayed in a variety of ways: it can be placed large and centered on the chest or back, or small and placed on the right or left side of the front of a tracksuit or pants.

Similar placement options are available for another symbol of the era—the USSR coat of arms. Unlike the monochromatic design of the "USSR" abbreviation, the coat of arms is created using a full multicolored set of threads, with all symbols applied using embroidery. The high-quality execution of the symbols allows them to delight the wearer for a long time.

05

patriotism in details

Rusich Sport places patriotism at the forefront, always striving to evoke the best feelings in its customers: pride and admiration for the victories of the Soviet Union.

One of these victories is undoubtedly the first human spaceflight. Yuri Gagarin is a true legend, a hero who transcended space and time, pierced the hearts of millions with his feat, and forever remained in the world’s memory as Cosmonaut No. 1. Recognizing Yuri Gagarin’s great mission, Rusich Sport’s management decided that the man who accomplished the greatest mission on Earth—Yuri Gagarin—should be placed alongside the letters "USSR" and the coat of arms of the Soviet Union in importance. With great reverence and respect, using the latest technology, artists have recreated one of the most famous images of Yuri Gagarin.
And today, every Rusich Sport client can proudly wear the image of the bravest and most courageous person on planet Earth on their chest. The delicate embroidery accurately captures the amazing smile of Cosmonaut No. 1.
